Eligibility Requirements

  • International Driving Permit (IDP):

  • Must be issued by a Geneva Convention (1949) country.

  • Valid for one year from the issue date and up to one year from your date of entry into Japan.

  • Ensure an entry stamp is obtained in your passport upon arrival in Japan.

  • Foreign License with Japanese Translation:

  • Accepted from Switzerland, Germany, France, Taiwan, Belgium, and Monaco.

  • Requires an official Japanese translation by JAF, embassies, or approved organizations.

Important Notes:

Licenses issued under conventions other than the Geneva Convention (e.g., Vienna Convention) are not valid.

Unauthorized international licenses or internet-issued permits (e.g., IAA, IDL) are not accepted.

Re-entry into Japan within 3 months of departure does not reset the one-year driving eligibility period.
